San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has been suspended for six regular-season games and fined $500,000 by the NFL following his summer arrest on disorderly conduct and criminal-tools charges.
The NFL announced the punishment after an investigation into York’s conduct, determining that he violated the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.
York had already stayed away from the 49ers’ first three regular-season games while the league investigated the matter, and those games will count toward his six-game suspension. He will also remain away from NFL league meetings during the suspension.
According to the league, York will be eligible to return Tuesday, Oct. 20, ahead of the 49ers’ Week 7 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
York was arrested over the summer on charges of disorderly conduct and possession of criminal tools. He was also suspected of engaging in the solicitation of prostitution.
In a statement, York accepted responsibility for his actions and apologized to his family, the 49ers organization, players, coaches, employees, fans and business partners.
“This was an inexcusable mistake, and I take full responsibility,” York said.
York acknowledged that his conduct fell short of the example he wants to set for his sons and said he hopes to demonstrate the importance of taking responsibility for personal failures.
“Leading the 49ers is a privilege, and one I don’t take lightly,” York said. “Your trust will have to be earned back over time, and I look forward to that work ahead.”
The six-game suspension and $500,000 fine represent the NFL’s disciplinary response to the incident, while York’s first three missed games will count toward the total. He is expected to resume his duties with the organization when his suspension ends in October.
