Nicolas Cage said he is currently living in hotels after a massive sinkhole damaged his Malibu oceanfront home in September.
The 62-year-old actor made the comments during a panel at Los Angeles Comic-Con. When asked about his Halloween plans, Cage replied, "I'm currently a little bit homeless." He added, "Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I'm just sort of living in hotels, so I don't have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight."
Cage noted he planned to take his 4-year-old daughter trick-or-treating in Santa Monica instead.
A sinkhole measuring roughly 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide opened on September 8 near the driveway of Cage's $10.5 million property on Sea Level Drive. The collapse swallowed part of the driveway and extended toward the home, prompting the city of Malibu to declare a local emergency. Officials red-tagged 31 homes in the area due to restricted access for residents and emergency vehicles, along with concerns over a gas leak.
No injuries were reported. The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by coastal erosion from heavy rain and high surf associated with Hurricane Marie earlier that month.
Cage purchased the four-level beachfront home in 2024. He quickly filed emergency permits for sandbagging, debris removal, and soil sampling to stabilize the site. The hole has since grown and wrapped around the side of the property.
Cage has continued working on film projects while dealing with the displacement. The incident highlights ongoing challenges with coastal erosion in Southern California beach communities.
