A NORAD F-16 fighter jet intercepted a general aviation aircraft after it entered temporarily restricted airspace over Thurmont, Maryland, at approximately 7:50 a.m. Saturday, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was at Camp David, the presidential retreat located near Thurmont. NORAD said the F-16 deployed flares during the interception to attract the pilot’s attention or communicate with the aircraft.

The aircraft was safely escorted out of the restricted area, and NORAD said the flares burned out quickly and completely and posed no danger to people on the ground.

The military did not indicate that the aircraft posed a threat to Trump or the presidential retreat. The temporary flight restriction is part of the security measures surrounding the president’s stay at Camp David.

The Continental U.S. NORAD Region, based at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, was the operational lead for the interception. NORAD advises pilots who are intercepted to immediately use an emergency frequency and follow instructions from military aircraft.
