Pizza Hut is partnering with nonprofit Little Free Library to create miniature libraries modeled after the pizza chain’s iconic red-roofed restaurants.

The company announced Tuesday that the “Little Hut Libraries” will launch next month in recognition of National Book Month and National Pizza Month.

The small structures will be stocked with books and a limited supply of Personal Pan Pizza gift cards. Customers will also be able to apply for a free Little Hut Library to establish a community book exchange.

The initiative builds on Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! program, which launched in 1984 and encourages children to read by rewarding reading achievements with Personal Pan Pizzas.

“Pizza Hut has always been about more than pizza; it’s about the memories and moments that happen around it,” Melissa Friebe, chief marketing officer of Pizza Hut U.S., said. “Our red roofs and BOOK IT! are two iconic pieces of Pizza Hut history.”

The new libraries also come as some Pizza Hut franchise operators have been bringing back the chain’s classic restaurant designs.

Tim Sparks, CEO of restaurant management company Daland Corporation, has reintroduced the traditional Pizza Hut look at several locations, including the red mansard roof, upholstered family booths, red-checkered tablecloths and stained-glass hanging lamps.

Some of the restored locations have also brought back features associated with older Pizza Hut restaurants, including video game machines, salad bars and the chain’s red plastic cups.
