Russian forces launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones at Kyiv overnight, injuring at least five people and damaging energy facilities and a major bridge in the Ukrainian capital. The attack came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of impending strikes on infrastructure.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported explosions in the suburbs and confirmed that debris from intercepted missiles struck a five-story apartment building in a western district. A kindergarten building was also damaged. Officials said the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River sustained hits and remains closed to traffic.

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones targeting Kyiv and surrounding regions. Air defenses intercepted most of the drones but only a small number of the missiles, according to statements from Ukrainian officials. Power and water supplies faced disruptions as a result of strikes on energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions.

The assault occurred as temperatures approached freezing and just days before planned three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States set for Tuesday in Abu Dhabi. Those negotiations aim to advance a U.S.-brokered peace process.

Zelenskyy stated that Russia fired the missiles at critical infrastructure in an apparent effort to pressure Ukraine ahead of the discussions. Russian officials claimed the targets included military-related industrial sites and energy facilities supporting Ukrainian forces.

This latest round of strikes follows a pattern of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure during periods of diplomatic activity. Civilian areas suffered damage, with reports noting injuries to residents including at least one child.
