Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will not allow President Donald Trump to place a "right-winger" on the Supreme Court once his party assumes control of the chamber.

Schumer made the comments in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday, two days after Democrats flipped the Senate in the midterm elections. He is expected to become majority leader when the new Congress convenes in 2027.

"The bottom line is we’re not going to allow a right-winger on the court," Schumer told the AP. He added that Democrats would reject "any crappy nominees" for the Supreme Court, lower courts, or Trump’s Cabinet.

Schumer declined to say whether Democrats would hold any Supreme Court vacancy open until after the 2028 presidential election, a tactic used by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2016.

The Democratic gains give the party leverage to reject nominees and potentially force Trump to select more moderate candidates for judicial and executive posts. Republicans had held the Senate majority heading into the midterms.

No immediate response came from the White House on the remarks. The comments highlight the partisan divide over judicial appointments that has persisted across multiple administrations.
