Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger hosted Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate for Los Angeles mayor, at a private meeting with prominent Hollywood, business, and nonprofit figures.

The off-the-record gathering took place last week at Schwarzenegger’s Los Angeles office, according to reports. It included at least seven people affiliated with United Talent Agency, among them Schwarzenegger’s longtime agent Jim Berkus. Executives involved in celebrity finance and clean technology also attended, along with the CEO of After-School All-Stars and the director of the USC Schwarzenegger Institute.

Raman, who has drawn scrutiny for her DSA support, used the session to outline her views on Los Angeles’ challenges and answer questions. Some attendees were reportedly surprised that Schwarzenegger had agreed to host a candidate backed by the socialist organization. Several who entered the meeting with reservations were said to have left more favorably disposed toward her after hearing her presentation.

Schwarzenegger’s chief of staff said Raman faced difficult, unrestricted questions and handled the discussion well. The meeting gave the candidate direct access to entertainment, business, and nonprofit leaders as she seeks to build support in one of the country’s largest cities.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican who served as California governor from 2003 to 2011, has remained active in Los Angeles civic and political affairs since leaving office.
