A kayaker was hospitalized Sunday after a shark he had caught while fishing bit him twice off the coast of Malibu, California, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The incident occurred around 8:32 a.m. near Paradise Cove along the 28200 block of West Pacific Coast Highway. The man was fishing approximately a half-mile offshore when he caught the shark and attempted to release it.

The shark bit the kayaker during the release attempt, causing him to fall from his kayak and into the water. The animal then bit him a second time.

Emergency crews transported the injured man to a local hospital by approximately 8:55 a.m. His condition was not immediately available.

Footage from the rescue reportedly showed a lifeguard moving quickly through the water while a small boat waited nearby. A man could also be seen swimming toward the boat, although it was unclear whether he was the injured kayaker.

Officials have not confirmed the species of shark involved. It may have been a mako, a fast-swimming shark known for its streamlined body and pointed snout, but authorities have not made a definitive identification.
