President Donald Trump was in attendance at Neyland Stadium for the matchup, watching the top-ranked Longhorns take on the No. 14 Volunteers in one of the weekend’s biggest college football games.

Texas appeared to have the game under control late in the fourth quarter before Tennessee turned the final minutes into a dramatic finish, but the Longhorns held on for a 20-17 victory.

Texas led 20-10 with less than six minutes remaining after running back Raleek Brown scored his second touchdown of the afternoon on a four-yard run. Tennessee answered with a late offensive surge that brought the home crowd back into the contest.

Quarterback Faizon Brandon kept the Volunteers moving and connected with wide receiver Mike Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:27 left, cutting the deficit to 20-17. Tennessee then recovered its own onside kick, giving itself another chance to tie or win. Texas’ defense held firm.

Brandon faced repeated pressure on the final possession, including a sack by linebacker Raye Jackson with just over a minute remaining. Tennessee continued to move the ball but could not reach the end zone. A final incomplete pass ended the comeback attempt and sealed the three-point win for Texas.

The Longhorns controlled much of the game defensively and limited Tennessee to 221 total yards. Texas forced two Tennessee fumbles, though the Volunteers recovered both.

Brown provided the biggest offensive contribution for Texas, rushing 17 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns. His scores accounted for all of the Longhorns’ touchdowns. Quarterback Arch Manning completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards with one interception. Ryan Wingo led the receivers with six catches for 74 yards, while Emmett Mosley V added a 43-yard reception.

Brandon completed 17 of 29 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown for Tennessee and rushed 23 times for two yards as the Texas defense limited his effectiveness on the ground. Matthews finished with four catches for 72 yards and the late score.

Texas built its initial lead in the first half. Brown opened the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run, Tennessee answered with a field goal, and the Longhorns added another field goal before intermission to lead 10-3. In the third quarter, Qua Moss returned a punt for a touchdown to make it 10-9. Texas responded with a 44-yard field goal before Tennessee tied the game at 10. The Longhorns regained control in the fourth behind Brown’s second touchdown and then survived the late rally.

The win moves Texas to 4-0 and gives the No. 1 Longhorns a major road victory to open SEC play. Tennessee falls to 3-1 after entering the game ranked No. 14. Texas returns home next to face Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 10.
