Outgoing Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina appeared on ABC’s “The View” Monday as part of a promotional tour for his new memoir, using the appearance to revisit his contentious relationship with President Donald Trump and suggest he could publicly expose the president’s phone number.
Tillis is promoting How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents: The Trouble with Sycophants, Courage Outsourcing, and Partisan Groupthink, a book that details his disagreements with Trump and includes accounts of profanity-laced exchanges between the two.
During the interview, co-host Sunny Hostin asked Tillis about private communications with Trump described in the book. Tillis said that despite their previous clashes, he and Trump have continued communicating by phone and text.
The conversation then turned to Trump’s recent decision to publicly share the reported phone number of Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas. Co-host Ana Navarro warned Tillis that the president could respond similarly by releasing his number.
“With all due respect, I got his number, too,” Tillis replied.
The remark drew a reaction from the studio audience as the discussion continued over whether Tillis was concerned that Trump might retaliate over the contents of his book. Tillis said he was not worried about the president’s response.
The appearance comes as Tillis prepares to leave the Senate after announcing his retirement following a series of breaks with Trump and the Republican leadership. Tillis opposed Trump on major legislation, including the administration-backed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” and has continued to criticize the president on other issues.
His departure leaves North Carolina’s Senate seat open for the 2026 election, where Republican nominee Michael Whatley is facing Democratic former Gov. Roy Cooper.
Tillis has also urged Whatley to maintain disagreements with Trump when necessary, while continuing to oppose some of his own party’s priorities in the Senate.
His decision to promote the memoir on “The View,” a program whose hosts have frequently criticized Trump and his administration, puts his ongoing political break with the president in the spotlight as Republicans head toward the November midterm elections.
