President Donald Trump is demanding answers about the handling of the investigation into the July 2024 assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pennsylvania, after new information about shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks was recently uncovered.

In a Tuesday Truth Social post, Trump said investigative evidence was missing, altered, corrupted, or otherwise unavailable when he took office on January 20, 2025. He specifically criticized the FBI under former Director Christopher Wray and the Biden administration for its handling of the case.

“Everybody knows the Crooked Joe Biden FBI didn’t do what they should have with respect to the Lunatic who shot me in Butler, PA,” Trump wrote. “By the time I got into Office, on January 20th, most of the information was missing, altered, corrupted, or gone. New info was just found! Why wasn’t it seen long ago? This was all a Democrat Plot, to get me out of the Election, that failed. Dirty Cop Christopher Wray should pay a price for the way he handled this assassination attempt, and certainly for the things he said.”

Attorney General Todd Blanche said the FBI has uncovered additional information about Crooks, including details about his background and activities. Newly reported records indicate that Crooks used the alias “Bob Dole” for some purchases and acquired equipment related to his firearm. Investigators continue to examine the material as they work to establish a complete picture of the attack.

The shooting occurred on July 13, 2024, when Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop during Trump’s campaign rally. A bullet grazed Trump’s ear, attendee Corey Comperatore was killed, and two other people were wounded. Secret Service personnel killed Crooks at the scene. The FBI initially said the investigation was focused on determining Crooks’ motive and whether he acted alone.

The FBI previously said it had found no credible evidence that Crooks conspired with others, while acknowledging that investigators had not initially established a definitive motive. The emergence of additional records has renewed scrutiny of the investigation and the government's handling of evidence surrounding the attack.

Trump's latest comments come as congressional investigators continue examining what happened before and during the Butler shooting. A 2025 review requested by Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley also identified significant security failures involving the Secret Service's handling and sharing of threat information before the rally.
