Kimberly Guilfoyle, President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Greece, has been asked to resign amid mounting scrutiny over allegations of improper and potentially illegal conduct before and during her tenure in Athens, according to new White House press secretary Katie Zacharia on Tuesday.

The request follows reports detailing several allegations against Guilfoyle, including that she threatened a Greek official, accepted improper gifts and services, and offered to use her influence within the Trump administration in exchange for financial assistance.

Among the allegations, Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters in text messages to wire $100,000 to pay off an American Express bill days before her Senate confirmation hearing. The reported request has intensified questions about her conduct as she sought confirmation for the diplomatic post.

President Trump signaled his displeasure on Monday when reporters asked whether he was considering removing Guilfoyle from the position.

“Well, we're looking at it,” Trump said at the White House. “We're not happy.”

The comments followed reports that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were deeply frustrated by the allegations and expected to decide Guilfoyle’s future during the week.

Guilfoyle has not directly addressed the individual allegations publicly. However, her attorneys issued a statement late Sunday denying wrongdoing and arguing that the money she sought from Deters represented payment for public appearances and speaking engagements arranged before her ambassadorial nomination that had not yet been paid.

The allegations have raised questions about Guilfoyle’s conduct before and during her diplomatic appointment. The reported $100,000 request is particularly significant because it allegedly occurred just days before her Senate confirmation hearing, when her suitability for the ambassadorship was under consideration.

The White House has not publicly detailed the specific reasons behind the request for Guilfoyle’s resignation. Her departure would mark a significant development for an ambassador appointed by Trump as his administration weighs the fallout from the allegations.
