The United States women's basketball team defeated France 97-79 on Sunday to claim its fifth consecutive FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup championship. The victory in Berlin extended the Americans' unbeaten run in the tournament to 36 straight games.

Breanna Stewart led the way with 22 points and was named tournament MVP. Jackie Young added 18 points, while Caitlin Clark scored 12. The U.S. trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before rallying to take a two-point lead at halftime. A dominant third quarter, outscoring France 30-12, sealed the win.

France, appearing in its first World Cup final, received 21 points from Dominique Malonga and 20 from Gabby Williams but could not maintain its early momentum. The result marked France's best finish in the event.

This marks the 12th overall World Cup title for the United States. The team improved to 9-0 in gold-medal games since 1983. The Americans have not lost an Olympic or World Cup contest in 20 years.

Head coach Kara Lawson guided the squad through a challenging path that included strong performances from veterans and newcomers alike. Stewart recorded a double-double in the final and became the first player to win multiple World Cup MVPs.

The U.S. enters the next Olympic cycle as the clear standard in women's basketball, with the 2028 Los Angeles Games on the horizon.
