The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back a familiar defensive star, acquiring three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.
The deal reunites Buckner with the franchise that selected him seventh overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent his first four NFL seasons in San Francisco before the 49ers traded him to Indianapolis in 2020 for a first-round pick.
Buckner, 32, has continued to be a productive presence along the defensive line. Through seven games with Indianapolis this season, he has recorded 31 tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and three passes defended.
San Francisco is adding an experienced interior defender as it looks to strengthen its defensive front for the remainder of the season. Buckner previously helped the 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV following the 2019 season.
The trade comes as Indianapolis reshapes its roster after a disappointing start to the season and the firing of longtime general manager Chris Ballard. Buckner is in the final year of his contract, making the move an opportunity for the Colts to acquire draft capital rather than risk losing him in free agency.
The 49ers will take on the remaining salary on Buckner’s contract for the 2026 season. The veteran defensive lineman now returns to the team where he began his career nearly a decade ago.
