Rep. Tom Smith of Michigan’s District 8 not only defeated Al Lemmo, whom he endorsed after dropping from the race and who had also received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, but also defeated Amir Hassan, a former federal law enforcement officer.

According to the Associated Press, Smith won with 50.4% of the vote over Hassan’s 33.2%.

Stunned by his victory, Smith released a statement Wednesday in which he expressed being “humbled” and “honored”.

In contrast to Smith’s win, the Democratic Senate race between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and moderate Haley Stevens saw the former crowned the victor.

El-Sayed’s victory marks another step forward for progressive Democrats and a potential shift in party values.

However, El-Sayed faces a tough opponent in the Fall: Trump-endorsed Republican Mike Rogers, who ran uncontested during Tuesday’s primary.

Now energized by the unexpected victory, Smith said he looks forward to working with House Speaker Mike Johnson and advancing the party's expansion efforts.
