A notable standout for Thursday's primary is U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who was elected in 2018. According to Britannica, Blackburn is the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Tennessee and “comfortably” won reelection against Democratic challenger Gloria Johnson and three other candidates.

Blackburn is riding on President Donald Trump's endorsement to boost her odds of winning tonight's primary, as her platform aims to protect the border against illegal immigration, maintain public safety, and promote economic growth.

Now, she seeks to become the state's first female governor, challenging U.S. Rep. John Rose. Rose’s agenda can be boiled down to his “Big Five”: education, infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and economic and community development.

If she were to win tonight’s primary, Blackburn would face off against one of the five Democratic candidates seeking the nomination. The candidates are: Carnita Atwater, Tim Cyr, Jerri Green, Ditch Kurtz, and Kevin Lee McCants.

Vying for the incumbent GOP Sen. Bill Hagerty’s seat are five democratic opponents: Marquita Bradshaw, Maria Brewer, Kevin Lee McCants, Civil Miller-Watkins, and Diana Onyejiaka.

Whoever earns the nomination will face an uphill battle against Hagerty, as the deep-red state has shown its support for the incumbent. Local reporting in 2020 showed Hagerty’s win over Marquita Bradshaw with 62% of the vote.
