Outgoing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is reportedly in discussions with President Donald Trump about a possible role in the administration as Trump's second term comes to an end in January.
According to a report from Axios, DeSantis has initiated conversations about potential positions and floated several possibilities where he could serve. The report, citing unnamed sources, indicates Trump is open to finding a place for the Florida Republican, though no final decision has been made.
Among the roles discussed is U.S. attorney general, a position that became vacant after Trump parted ways with Pam Bondi. However, sources offered conflicting accounts about DeSantis’ level of interest in the role, with some suggesting he pursued it and others saying he is not interested.
Other positions mentioned include Secretary of War, currently held by Pete Hegseth, as well as a potential future opening on the U.S. Supreme Court if a vacancy arises. Some sources described a judicial appointment as DeSantis’ preferred long-term goal.
The discussions come after a complicated political relationship between the two figures. DeSantis was first elected governor in 2018 with strong backing from Trump, but tensions emerged during the 2024 Republican presidential primary, when DeSantis challenged Trump for the nomination.
Despite that rivalry, both sides have indicated that relations have improved. Trump has publicly described their current dynamic as largely positive, while acknowledging some lingering friction from the campaign.
Still, questions remain about whether trust issues could affect any potential appointment, particularly for high-level positions such as attorney general. Sources cited in the report suggested that while Trump may be open to working with DeSantis again, past political competition could factor into final decisions.
With DeSantis unable to seek another term as governor, his next move remains uncertain. Any appointment would ultimately depend on Trump’s selection process and the availability of key roles within the administration.
