Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy, is threatening to pursue legal action against social media influencers and online personalities who have accused him of being involved in the deaths of his three young children.

Patrick’s attorney, Howard Cooper, issued a statement Tuesday condemning what he described as an escalating campaign of misinformation and defamation against his client following the mistrial in Lindsay Clancy’s murder case. Cooper said Patrick and his family have faced threats to their reputation, livelihood, and personal safety as a result of these fictitious claims.

Lindsay Clancy was charged with killing the couple’s three children at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Jan. 24, 2023. She has acknowledged strangling the children but pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, with her defense team arguing that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time.

The murder trial ended Friday, September 4, when a Plymouth County judge declared a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. The jury had tasked only with considering whether Lindsay could be held criminally responsible for the killings, not whether she had actually committed them. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek a retrial.

Patrick testified during the trial and became the subject of intense online scrutiny. Following his testimony, internet personalities and amateur internet sleuths began circulating theories alleging that he was somehow responsible for the deaths. Patrick's legal team rejected those allegations, describing them as “outright falsehoods” and accusing influencers and conspiracy theorists of promoting the claims to increase their social-media audiences or otherwise profit from the attention.

Cooper said the allegations have gone beyond online criticism, claiming they have resulted in real-world threats against Patrick and his family. His legal team has notified law enforcement about what they characterized as baseless claims and indicated that further legal action could follow.

Patrick has publicly defended Lindsay despite the tragedy. During an interview with The New Yorker in 2024, he said he did not view her as a “monster,” but rather as someone who became seriously ill. He also testified about their family and Lindsay’s role as a mother during the murder trial.

The legal threats come as the Clancy case remains at a standstill. Following the mistrial, Lindsay remains in a psychiatric facility while prosecutors determine whether to retry her. Patrick, meanwhile, is seeking to distance himself from the online accusations and refocus attention on the tragic deaths of his three children and his family’s ongoing grief.
