More than 167,000 pounds of raw beef, pork, and goat products are being recalled nationwide after federal inspectors determined the meat was produced without the required federal inspection.

Star Meat Delivery Inc., based in Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of products that were distributed to retailers and restaurants across the country through Georgia-based distributor A&D Foods. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall Sept. 22 after discovering the issue during surveillance activities.

The products are particularly concerning because their packaging carried a false USDA mark of inspection with the establishment number “EST. 1363.” FSIS said that number does not have a federal grant of inspection and warned that products bearing the mark should be considered misbranded and unsafe to eat.

The recall includes a wide variety of raw meat, including sliced ribeye, beef chuck, oxtail, short ribs, ground pork, pork chorizo, pork chops, pork ribs, pork feet, Boston butt and multiple goat products. The meat was produced on various dates before Sept. 22.

Consumers may have difficulty identifying the affected products because retailers could have removed the original bulk packaging and placed their own price and safe-handling labels on individual packages. FSIS said some of the recalled meat could still be sitting in refrigerators or freezers or being held by restaurants and retailers.

The USDA warned that meat produced without federal inspection could contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants. The recall has been classified as Class I, the agency's highest risk category, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product could cause serious health consequences.

No illnesses or injuries connected to the recalled products have been reported so far. Consumers who believe they have affected meat should not eat it and should either discard it or return it to the place of purchase. Restaurants and retailers have also been instructed not to sell or serve the products.

FSIS said the recall could be expanded as investigators gather additional information and identify other affected products or labels.
