Six people suffered injuries during a stabbing incident at Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington, on Thursday afternoon. The Tacoma Fire Department responded to a report of a possible stabbing at 1:38 p.m. local time, finding five victims, four students and one adult security guard, with stab or cut wounds, along with a sixth person, the student suspect, who also required hospitalization for minor injuries.

Four of the victims were initially in critical or serious condition, while others had minor injuries, but all six were reported stable by late afternoon. Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Shelbie Boyd confirmed the suspect, a Foss High School student, was taken into custody at the scene and later booked on five counts of first-degree assault. The suspect was hospitalized before being detained.

The school initiated a lockdown at 1:38 p.m., and students were released for pickup by parents at 2:45 p.m. from a reunification area in the student parking lot. Tacoma Public Schools canceled classes and after-school activities at Foss High School for Friday and plans to reopen on Monday with additional counselors available for students and staff. District spokesperson Tanisha Jumper praised the quick response of staff and first responders.

Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd described the initial scene, where crews treated patients, including four in critical condition and one with minor injuries, among the victims. Boyd noted the incident stemmed from an altercation on campus and assured the public the scene was secure with no other victims found after a search.

Local reports indicated the stabbing arose from a fight involving a group of juniors attempting to assault another student over marijuana, prompting the suspect to produce a knife. Videos of the incident circulated on social media, prompting reactions from students, including freshmen who expressed shock at the motive.

No names of the victims or suspect have been released, and the investigation continues. Foss High School serves students in central Tacoma, about 30 miles south of Seattle.
