A 19-year-old California college wrestling standout died Sunday after slipping and falling while hiking with friends near Illilouette Falls in Yosemite National Park.

Ryan George, a Santa Rosa native and Montgomery High School graduate, was entering his second season at Santa Rosa Junior College after earning All-American honors as a freshman. He had competed in a wrestling tournament just two days before his death.

George finished third at the 2025 California Community College Athletic Association state championships at 197 pounds and had recently placed second at the Dave Pacheco Invitational at Sacramento City College. His college coach, Fred Duerr, remembered him as a positive presence who encouraged those around him.

“If you knew Ryan, you know he was one of the most genuine, positive people you could ever meet,” Duerr said. “He had a way of lighting up a room, making you feel welcome, and bringing out the best in everyone around him.”

George also wrestled at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, where he won the North Bay League title at 217 pounds and finished second in the North Coast Section tournament as a senior.

Montgomery wrestling coach Ian Hesz described George as a consistently upbeat teammate who was always willing to help others.

“He never complained, never grumbled. He was always smiling, always helping. He was a stellar teammate,” Hesz said.

Illilouette Fall is approximately 370 feet high and is reached by steep trails in Yosemite. The National Park Service says the waterfall is best viewed from the Panorama Trail several miles from Glacier Point.

George’s death has drawn tributes from his coaches and the wrestling community, with those who knew him remembering him not only for his success on the mat but also for his character and leadership.
