Florida Republicans Byron Donalds and Ashley Moody have opened leads over their Democratic opponents in Florida's gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races, according to a new InsiderAdvantage poll released Friday.
The survey, conducted October 28-29 among 1,200 likely voters, found Donalds leading Democrat David Jolly 49% to 45% in the race for governor. Another 2% supported other candidates, while 4% remained undecided.
In the Senate contest, Republican incumbent Ashley Moody led Democrat Angie Nixon 49% to 43%. Two percent supported another candidate, while 6% were undecided.
Both Republican candidates held advantages greater than the poll's 2.83-percentage-point margin of error. The survey used a mixed-mode text and panel methodology and weighted its results by age, race, gender, and political affiliation.
InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery said the results reflect a recent increase in Republican support, putting both GOP nominees ahead as the campaigns approach Election Day.
"I expected this race to be close and it is. But there has been a GOP surge in the past few days, and it has placed the Republican nominees for Governor and U.S. Senate in a position in which they lead outside of the margin of error," Towery said.
Towery also credited Jolly with running a strong campaign but argued that the Democratic Senate nominee's political positioning could create additional challenges for the party's ticket.
"Were he not facing the headwinds created by a Senatorial candidate who strikes fear among certain demographics for her association with socialism, it could have been a photo-finish," Towery said.
He concluded that both Republican candidates appeared to be gaining support, saying, "But as of now both Republicans seem to be on the rise."
The results provide a snapshot of the two major Florida contests less than a week before Election Day, with Donalds holding a four-point advantage over Jolly and Moody leading Nixon by six points.
