An F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the U.S. Air Force's 52nd Fighter Wing crashed Tuesday at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany, injuring the pilot, according to the U.S. military.

The aircraft went down at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time at the American base. The pilot ejected from the aircraft and was receiving medical care following the crash. Officials have not publicly released additional details about the pilot's condition.

German emergency and fire crews responded to the incident, according to the local district where Spangdahlem is located. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Spangdahlem is home to an F-16 fighter squadron that operates approximately 20 aircraft and supports U.S. Air Force and NATO missions around the world. The base is one of the key American military installations in Europe.

The base has roughly 5,000 military and civilian employees, along with their family members, and also employs between 700 and 800 German workers. The U.S. Air Force has maintained a presence at Spangdahlem since the mid-1950s.

Spangdahlem, along with Ramstein Air Base near Kaiserslautern, is considered one of the most important U.S. military airfields in Germany and serves as a major hub for American and NATO operations in the region.
