Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has reportedly fled Brazil aboard a private jet bound for the United States, according to Brazilian media reports published Tuesday. However, authorities have not independently confirmed his departure, and Argentina has denied records showing that he entered the country.
Reports from Brazilian outlet Metrópoles and Argentine publication Infobae indicated that Bolsonaro may have traveled through Argentina before attempting to reach the United States. The reports identified a Gulfstream G400 private jet that was expected to depart from Puerto Iguazú, near Brazil’s border, for the United States.
Brazil’s Federal Police contacted Argentine authorities to investigate whether Bolsonaro had crossed the border. Argentina’s National Directorate of Migration said it had no record of his entry, while officials also disputed reports that a flight carrying members of the Bolsonaro family had departed for the United States.
The reports emerged after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports and prohibited him from leaving the country. He missed the deadline to turn over the documents, and authorities canceled his passports, according to reports.
Bolsonaro had denied plans to leave Brazil. In a video posted Monday, he criticized the passport order and said he had not intended to flee the country. His campaign coordinator, Sen. Rogério Marinho, also denied reports that he had departed.
The controversy follows Bolsonaro’s defeat to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff election. The senator has been under investigation in a case involving alleged financial crimes, and the passport restrictions were imposed amid concerns that he might leave the country.
As of Tuesday, Brazilian authorities were still working to establish Bolsonaro’s whereabouts. Reports of his alleged flight to the United States remain unconfirmed by official border and flight records.
