President Donald Trump is bringing former football players Johnny Manziel, Colt McCoy and Danny Amendola into the campaign spotlight as Republicans make a final push to mobilize voters ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump is scheduled to campaign with the three former football stars in Texas on Tuesday, using their name recognition to connect with sports fans and encourage voter participation. The effort is aimed in part at younger men, a demographic that helped Trump win the 2024 presidential election.
Manziel, a former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, became a prominent figure in college football before playing in the NFL. McCoy, another former Texas Longhorns quarterback, went on to play for multiple NFL teams. Amendola spent 13 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver, winning two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.
The appearances come as Republicans work to maintain their political support in Texas and across the country ahead of Election Day. Campaigns are increasingly looking to public figures outside traditional politics to draw attention, reach new audiences and encourage supporters to vote.
For Trump, the events offer a way to combine his campaign message with the popularity of football, particularly among younger male voters. Republicans are hoping that the same enthusiasm that helped drive turnout in 2024 will carry into the midterm elections, when the party faces the challenge of defending its congressional majorities.
Trump's Texas campaign stops are scheduled for Corpus Christi and Lubbock on Tuesday, with the football stars joining him as Republicans make their final appeals to voters.
