The House of Representatives adjourned early on Wednesday after completing its scheduled votes, canceling all business planned for Thursday.

Speaker Mike Johnson announced the schedule change, allowing lawmakers to depart Washington for an extended recess ahead of the November midterm elections. The chamber is not expected to return until November 9.

Republicans had originally planned to remain in session through Thursday. The early departure follows an earlier decision to cancel the final two weeks of September session. Lawmakers took their last votes of the week on a Russia sanctions bill. Other items, including certain EPA regulations, were moved up to Wednesday afternoon.

The move delays action on a privileged impeachment resolution against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth filed earlier this week by Rep. Thomas Massie. The resolution would have required a floor vote by Thursday if the House had stayed in session.

Johnson told reporters the adjustment was made so members could return to their districts and campaign. He emphasized the need for lawmakers to explain legislative accomplishments to voters.

House Republicans have passed hundreds of bills this Congress, many of which remain pending in the Senate. The Senate continues its work separately and is not subject to the same early recess.
