Delaware State Police charged Walter Moorhead, 74, of Salisbury, Maryland, with manslaughter after he allegedly shot and killed a woman walking through a field in Ellendale on Friday evening.

The shooting occurred around 7:40 p.m. near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road. Police said Moorhead was hunting from a ground blind when he believed he saw a deer and fired his rifle, striking 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto of Georgetown, Delaware.

Soto was walking through the field with a man and two children when she was shot. Troopers provided emergency medical care at the scene before she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators identified Moorhead as the shooter after speaking with him at the scene. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and three counts of first-degree reckless endangering.

Moorhead was arraigned and released after posting a $43,000 cash bond. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the shooting.
