One person was killed and eight others wounded in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, following the annual Magic City Classic college football game on Saturday night.
Birmingham police responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West. Officers found nine gunshot victims at the scene outside the stadium, where the rivalry matchup between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University had concluded earlier in the evening.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Another remained in critical condition Sunday morning, while seven others were listed in stable condition, according to police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman. Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene and placed into evidence.
One individual was detained and transported to police headquarters for questioning. Authorities have not released details on a motive or identified a suspect at this time. The investigation remains active with assistance from additional agencies.
The Magic City Classic draws large crowds annually to Birmingham for the historically Black college football rivalry. Tailgating activities were suspended following the incident, and officials urged the public to avoid the area.
The violence occurred one week after a separate shooting near Florida A&M University in Tallahassee that wounded 11 people. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett noted that most spectators had already departed the stadium property when the shots were fired nearby among vendors.
Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the incident as senseless violence in a statement Saturday night. Police are seeking video footage or additional information from witnesses to aid the investigation.
