Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reported for jury duty Monday at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building in Miami-Dade County, taking part in the same civic process as other eligible residents despite his status as one of the world’s wealthiest people.

The 62-year-old billionaire, who grew up in South Florida and attended Miami Palmetto Senior High School, was seen leaving the courthouse wearing a black polo shirt, dark jeans and sunglasses. Bezos smiled and waved toward cameras before getting into a waiting vehicle but declined to answer questions about a recent Amazon cargo plane crash.

Bezos has lived on Indian Creek Island near Miami since 2023. Reports indicate he met the standard qualifications for jury service, including being a U.S. citizen over 18, residing in the district, speaking English and having no disqualifying criminal convictions. It remains unclear whether he was ultimately selected to serve on a jury because that information is confidential.

Florida jurors receive $15 per day along with mileage reimbursement. Bezos' appearance comes shortly after Amazon suspended operations with cargo carrier 21 Air following a deadly crash at Miami International Airport on Sept. 6 that killed five people and injured five others. Bezos did not comment on the crash when approached outside the courthouse.

Bezos stepped down as Amazon's chief executive officer in 2021 but remains the company's executive chairman. He is currently ranked as the world's third-richest person, with a net worth exceeding $271 billion according to recent Forbes estimates.
