Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump held a productive phone conversation on Wednesday to review bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
The leaders discussed trade, defense, energy, critical technologies, and other areas of the relationship. They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement to deepen cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security. This marked their first telephonic discussion since June.
India and the United States continue negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the United States for talks aimed at securing an interim arrangement.
The conversation occurred amid India's concerns over recent US legislation that authorizes tariffs of up to 100 percent on major purchasers of Russian oil. New Delhi has warned that such measures could affect bilateral relations and global energy markets.
Bilateral goods trade reached $149.1 billion in 2025, with the United States serving as India's largest trading partner. The relationship also encompasses growing defense collaboration and initiatives in critical and emerging technologies.
Modi described the exchange as productive in a post on X and noted the shared goal of strengthening the strategic partnership.
