Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of supporting Hamas and encouraging unrest against Jewish New Yorkers in a video message Tuesday, days before his scheduled appearance at the United Nations General Assembly.

“Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani,” Netanyahu said, adding that he plans to address the mayor directly during his Thursday speech at the U.N. Reuters reported that Netanyahu intends to use the address to defend Israel’s military actions and respond to criticism over the Gaza war.

The exchange followed Mamdani’s appearance on CNN Monday, where the mayor described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and accused him of being an architect of genocide against Palestinians. Mamdani has also argued that the International Criminal Court’s 2024 arrest warrant for Netanyahu should be honored. Israel rejects the allegations against Netanyahu, and the United States and Israel are not members of the ICC.

Mamdani previously campaigned on a promise to seek Netanyahu’s arrest if he visited New York. His administration later determined that New York City does not have independent legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant, prompting Mamdani to call on the federal government to take action instead. President Donald Trump has said Netanyahu will not be arrested while in the United States.

Netanyahu is expected to make a brief trip to New York for the U.N. gathering, with his speech scheduled for Thursday before his return to Israel. The latest confrontation adds another layer to the longstanding dispute between the Israeli prime minister and Mamdani over Israel, Hamas, and the Gaza conflict.
