The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire is facing backlash for an X post on Tuesday that said the organization “openly support[s] the assassination” of every elected Democrat in the state, before adding that those unwilling to carry out such an act should “probably vote GOP.” A post later on the same day called for people to "abandon democracy."

The party has faced similar scrutiny before as this post represents just another instance of the state Libertarian Party using social media to promote or justify political violence. In September 2024, its X account posted that anyone who murdered then-Vice President Kamala Harris would be an “American hero,” along with other similar posts. The posts drew the attention of state and federal law enforcement, including the U.S. Secret Service.

Another post from the group's account said that "Donald Trump absolutely deserves the death penalty" and that the only good outcome about his survival was that the RNC couldn't appoint a worse candidate in his place. The post came just two days after the failed assassination attempt of Trump at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania in July of 2024.

Most of the 2024 posts were subsequently deleted, and the party issued an explanation arguing that it was acknowledging how some members might react to what it described as a tyrannical president. The party also defended the use of political violence under its interpretation of libertarian principles. Condemnation from the national Libertarian Party followed the post, the party's presidential nominee Chase Oliver calling it abhorrent.

In March 2026, the party again posted similar rhetoric writing that it was “perfectly permissible to kill” former Democratic Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky over his proposal for a state income tax. The party argued under libertarian theory that such threats to property rights justified lethal force. Volinsky contacted law enforcement following the post, and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed it was aware of the reported threat.

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire was disaffiliated from the national Libertarian Party in May 2026 after the Libertarian National Committee voted 15-2 to sever ties. The decision cited the state affiliate's 2024 endorsement of Donald Trump, controversial social media activity, and what national leaders described as anti-libertarian positions. The disaffiliation was upheld unanimously by the party's Judicial Committee in August 2026.

The New Hampshire Libertarian Party has defended its statements by arguing that libertarians reject the initiation of force but support defensive violence against aggression, including from government actors. The group sites historical events, including the American Revolution, to justify its positions.

Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized the rhetoric across party lines. New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Scott Maltzie condemned the violent rhetoric in March, saying political disagreements should be handled through elections and the democratic process rather than threats or intimidation.

The latest post comes as New Hampshire heads toward the 2026 elections, including contests for the state's open U.S. Senate seat and all 424 seats in the state Legislature. The Libertarian Party's statements have repeatedly drawn attention because of their explicit references to violence against political opponents rather than ordinary policy disagreements. The posts, as well as the state party's severed tie to the national organization, has added to growing divisions within libertarian circles.
