The University of Mississippi confirmed the deaths of two students as local and state authorities continue separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding each case. The Lafayette County Coroner’s Office confirmed both deaths, while university police said they are not aware of any additional student fatalities.

University officials also warned students and the public about unverified information spreading online. The university said the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation and urged people not to speculate or repeat information that has not been officially confirmed.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said the cases are being treated as separate investigations and that investigators have found no evidence connecting the two deaths. Claims and speculation circulating online have included allegations that laced drugs or other substances may have played a role, but authorities have not confirmed those claims.

Packaged kratom purchased from a retail store was recovered during both investigations. Authorities stressed that they have no confirmed evidence that kratom or any other substance contributed to either death.

The causes of death have not been determined. Authorities are continuing to work with state and local law enforcement as they investigate the cases. The university also canceled some fraternity and sorority events scheduled for Tuesday amid the investigations.

Officials are encouraging students to avoid kratom and other substances that are not prescribed or obtained through regulated sources. Free Narcan is also available through vending machines on the Ole Miss campus and at the downtown parking garage in Oxford, according to The Oxford Eagle.

The availability of Narcan and the warnings about unregulated substances come as authorities continue investigating the deaths, but officials have not said that either student died from an opioid overdose or that the deaths were connected to laced drugs.
