Paramount executives have discussed asking billionaire Elon Musk to join a group of equity investors in the company, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Semafor. Musk is reportedly one of several wealthy individuals being considered by Paramount CEO David Ellison as the company seeks additional capital.

The discussions come as Paramount prepares to complete its roughly $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The company is looking to strengthen its financial position as it takes on the combined operations of the two media companies.

The size of any potential investment from Musk has not been determined, and there is no indication that he has agreed to invest. Paramount declined to comment, while Musk did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk has longstanding financial ties to David Ellison’s father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. Larry Ellison has personally guaranteed more than $40 billion of the equity financing supporting Paramount’s Warner Bros. acquisition. He also invested $1 billion in Musk’s 2022 purchase of Twitter, now known as X, and previously invested in Tesla and served on its board.

Paramount has already lined up billions of dollars from other investors for the Warner Bros. deal, including sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The Federal Communications Commission recently approved arrangements allowing those investors to hold indirect non-voting equity in the combined company.

A potential Musk investment would come as Paramount seeks to broaden the pool of financial backers supporting the Warner Bros. transaction. The combined company would include major media properties such as CBS, CNN, HBO and Paramount’s film and television operations.

No agreement with Musk has been announced, and the reported discussions remain under consideration as Paramount works toward closing the Warner Bros. acquisition.
