The Detroit Pistons dominated the Orlando Magic 116-94 in Game 7 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena, securing a 4-3 series victory and advancing to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2008.
Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 32 points and 12 assists, while Tobias Harris added 30 points and nine rebounds. The duo combined for 62 points, overwhelming Orlando's defense. Jalen Duren contributed a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, his first of the series. Detroit shot efficiently at 51.3 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from three-point range, generating 30 assists on 41 made field goals.
Paolo Banchero paced the Magic with 38 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, but Orlando managed just 41.3 percent shooting overall and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Desmond Bane scored 16 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. had 13, but no other Magic player reached double figures until late. The visitors committed 13 turnovers and scored only 15 points in the third quarter, allowing Detroit to pull away with an 11-2 run to open the period.
The series had been a rollercoaster. Orlando, the No. 8 seed, jumped to a 3-1 lead with wins in Games 1 (112-101), 3 (113-105), and 4 (94-88). Detroit, the top seed, responded by taking Games 2 (98-83), 5 (116-109), and 6 (93-79). The Game 6 victory was particularly dramatic, as the Pistons overcame a 24-point deficit, the largest comeback in a playoff elimination game, to force the decisive matchup.
Detroit's resilience marked the 15th instance of a team overcoming a 3-1 deficit in NBA playoff history. Fans at Little Caesars Arena erupted at the buzzer, celebrating the franchise's first series win since defeating the Magic in the 2008 Eastern Conference finals.
The Pistons now await the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers-Toronto Raptors series, with Game 1 of the semifinals scheduled for Tuesday at home. Cunningham, who averaged 32.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists for the series, has emerged as the driving force behind Detroit's postseason surge.
