The Philadelphia 76ers withstood a late rally from the Boston Celtics to win Game 7 109-100 on Saturday night, completing a stunning comeback from a 3-1 series deficit and advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Joel Embiid delivered 34 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists in 39 minutes, anchoring Philadelphia's effort against a depleted Boston squad missing Jayson Tatum due to left knee discomfort. Tyrese Maxey added 30 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, marking the first time in NBA history that teammates posted at least 30-10-5 stat lines in a Game 7. Rookie V.J. Edgecombe contributed 23 points, including five 3-pointers, while Paul George scored 13 points.
The No. 7 seed 76ers shot 47.6 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from 3-point range, converting 20 of 23 free throws and committing just nine turnovers.
Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 33 points and nine rebounds, while Derrick White added 26 points. Neemias Queta had a double-double off the bench with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Boston shot under 40 percent from the field and struggled from deep in the clutch, missing nine straight shots late.
Philadelphia built an 18-point lead in the third quarter behind a 14-3 run, but saw Boston close to one point multiple times in the fourth, including 97-96 on a Brown bucket with over five minutes left. Maxey responded with eight straight points in the final two minutes to seal it, including free throws by Edgecombe at the end.
The victory marked the 14th comeback from a 3-1 deficit in NBA playoff history and Philadelphia's first series win over Boston since 1982, ending a 44-year drought in their rivalry -- the most-played playoff matchup with 23 series. The 76ers snapped their own 0-18 franchise record when down 3-1, while ending Boston's perfect 32-0 mark in such situations.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said Tatum was ruled out pre-tipoff after reporting knee issues, forcing an experimental starting lineup including Luka Garza, Ron Harper Jr., and Baylor Scheierman, three players in their postseason debuts.
Philadelphia now faces the New York Knicks in the semifinals, starting Monday at Madison Square Garden.
