Polish authorities launched an investigation Sunday into a possible assassination plot targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Security officials received credible information, including an emailed tip, about the threat. They convened an urgent meeting at the Internal Security Agency’s counterterrorism center in Warsaw to coordinate a response.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka announced that Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Special Services Coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak ordered immediate action following the report to police.
Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister coordinating special services, stated after the meeting that authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness. He noted a strong probability that the threats could have been acted upon, though officials provided no further details on the nature of the plot, potential perpetrators, or timing.
Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka confirmed that Tusk was briefed on the threat around 7 a.m. Sunday and continued official duties in Warsaw. One report indicated the information pointed to possible involvement by right-wing extremists who are Polish nationals.
The probe comes amid heightened security concerns in Poland following a series of school stabbings that have prompted nationwide checks and detentions. Officials have described an increase in threats and worrying messages reaching police in recent years.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the assassination plot, and the investigation remains ongoing. Polish leaders have faced various security challenges in the past, including threats noted after incidents elsewhere in Europe.
