A Portland police dog was shot and killed Thursday while assisting authorities in an attempted arrest of a homicide suspect, who also died during the confrontation.

The shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. near Southeast 97th Avenue and Southeast Oak Street in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood, according to police.

Kylo, who had served with the Portland Police Bureau for six years, was wounded during the shooting and taken to an animal hospital, where he later died. His death came on what was supposed to be his final shift before retirement.

“Today was scheduled to be his last shift,” the bureau said in a statement Thursday night.

The arrest attempt stemmed from an investigation into the shooting death of 60-year-old Jeff Thompson, who was killed inside his home in southeast Portland earlier in the week.

Gresham police detectives used public safety camera footage from Vance Park and information from automatic license plate readers to identify a suspect. Authorities later located the man near a motel in southeast Portland and requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force.

The suspect fled when task force members attempted to arrest him, leading to the shooting. The man died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts, and officers recovered a firearm.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or determined who fired the shot that killed Kylo.

Two Portland officers and two officers from other agencies were involved in the shooting, according to preliminary information. The Portland officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, as required by bureau policy, while the investigation continues.
