The Michigan race was called Tuesday night by the Associated Press, two hours after polls closed, as James, 45, held a 50% to 35% lead over second-place opponent Perry Johnson, 78.

This win, in addition to Trump-backed candidates in Washington state, Kansas and Michigan, solidifies the president's endorsement power within the Republican Party. Notable standouts include Washington’s 4th congressional district. Yakima County Commissioner Amanda McKinney received an endorsement from President Trump, which gave her the edge to beat out ten other candidates for top billing.

James, who represents Michigan's 10th congressional district, campaigned on cutting taxes and promoting a parental bill of rights.

President Trump endorsed James in late June, describing the U.S. rep as a “conservative fighter capable of winning in November and saving Michigan from its current leadership.”

Now, James will face off against Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who won the Democratic nomination Tuesday night, in the upcoming Fall general election.

Benson decisively secured her position against opponent Chris Swanson, winning 83.2% of the votes.

It remains to be seen if President Trump's endorsement of James will help leverage the Republican nominee into the governor’s office, as the party remains hopeful they can flip the seat come November.
