Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib introduced legislation aimed at the TSA to prevent passenger information exchanges with ICE.

Titled “No TSA Data for ICE Act,” Tlaib’s goal with this legislation would bar Immigration and Customs Enforcement from coordinating on immigration enforcement through information gained by the Transportation Security Administration. According to a press release by Tlaib’s office, the TSA currently provides names, birth dates, and other details that have contributed to arrests at airports.

“TSA is complicit in ICE expanding its chaos and cruelty to target our communities in our airports and has been openly lying about it,” said Tlaib.

Tlaib’s office says that due to this collusion between both agencies, a surge of arrests has been occurring at airports, specifically ICE agents targeting immigrants in the process of changing status.

In addition, the legislation would prevent the Department of Homeland Security from barring individuals from using trusted traveler programs, including TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, as retaliation against critics of ICE or the Trump administration.

If enacted, this would heavily impact DHS’s ability to separate entities to coordinate immigration enforcement.

A spokesperson for the TSA argued against Tlaib and her legislation, saying the restrictions would make the United States more vulnerable to terror threats, saying, “It’s not shocking that some in the Democrat Party would want to neuter the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to protect Americans from terrorists.”

Tlaib’s office states the bill is cosponsored by 25 members of Congress.
