A polling location in Leavenworth County, Kansas, exhausted its supply of paper ballots around 8 a.m. Tuesday due to a clerical mistake by the county clerk.
The error resulted in just 100 ballots being ordered for the Linwood Community Building rather than the intended 100,000, according to the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office.
The shortage occurred on Election Day and immediately affected voters arriving at the site. Election officials responded by directing affected individuals to other nearby polling locations. In a statement released by the Leavenworth County Election Office, officials assured voters that "the shortage was discovered early, and efforts to correct the mistake began immediately."
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in election logistics and the importance of accurate preparation ahead of voting. No other polling sites in the county reported similar problems.
Voters and observers noted the disruption early in the day, with some expressing frustration over the inconvenience. The Secretary of State’s Office stated that the issue stemmed solely from the ordering error and did not indicate any broader problems with the election process.
Leavenworth County has a consistent record of strong Republican support in recent elections. In the 2024 presidential contest, Donald Trump received approximately 60 percent of the vote compared to 37.6 percent for Kamala Harris, a margin of more than 22 points. Similar results occurred in 2020 and 2016, with Republican nominees securing victories by margins between 21 and 25 points.
The county has shifted further toward Republican candidates over the past quarter century, moving from a 12-point margin in 2000 to the larger leads seen in recent cycles. This voting pattern underscores the significance of reliable election operations in areas with high participation and predictable outcomes.
Election authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured the public that additional ballots would be made available where needed throughout the day.
