Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told people familiar with his thinking that he does not plan to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028, while leaving open the possibility of running for president in a later election cycle.

Rubio addressed the speculation publicly this week while traveling in Colombia. Asked about his political future, Rubio said he is “100% focused on my job” and noted that he currently serves as both secretary of state and national security adviser. When pressed about whether he could eventually pursue the presidency, Rubio said, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I have no plans at this time.”

People familiar with Rubio’s thinking have also indicated that he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance decides to seek the Republican nomination in 2028. Rubio has previously indicated that he does not intend to challenge Vance for the nomination, although questions about his longer-term political ambitions have continued to circulate.

The comments come as Republicans begin looking beyond President Donald Trump’s second term and toward the party’s next presidential nomination. Vance has increasingly been discussed as a potential 2028 candidate, while Rubio has also been viewed as a possible contender because of his current role in the administration and his previous service in the U.S. Senate.

For now, Rubio appears focused on his administration responsibilities rather than building a presidential campaign. His comments leave open the possibility that he could seek the presidency in a future cycle beyond 2028.
