SpaceX plans for a massive new launch site in coastal Louisiana have prompted objections from several wildlife organizations concerned about effects on sensitive habitats and endangered species.

The company announced the Starbase Louisiana facility last month in partnership with Republican Gov. Jeff Landry. The project involves a $100 billion investment on roughly 125,000 acres of marshland in Vermilion Parish near Pecan Island. Plans call for five launch complexes and up to thousands of rocket launches annually to support Starlink expansion and other missions. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for 2029.

Three groups—the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, National Wildlife Federation, and Pontchartrain Conservancy—have filed comments urging the Federal Aviation Administration to retain environmental review requirements. They argue that proposed regulatory changes would waive protections under 13 laws, including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and National Environmental Policy Act, for commercial space projects. The area serves as critical habitat along the Mississippi Flyway for millions of migratory waterfowl, as well as endangered whooping cranes and other species.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has stated that the company will leave large portions of the land untouched and that wildlife can coexist with operations, citing experience at other sites. State officials highlight the economic potential, including thousands of jobs and a major charitable contribution to the parish. The facility would also leverage local natural gas resources.

Critics note the site's proximity to wildlife refuges and ongoing coastal erosion issues. Some local residents have expressed frustration over limited transparency and nondisclosure agreements surrounding the deal. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials have indicated that available information remains limited at this early stage.

The debate centers on balancing rapid space industry growth with longstanding environmental safeguards in a region already facing habitat pressures.
