Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico reportedly spent part of his recent absence from the campaign trail at the Lindner Center of Hope, a mental health facility in Mason, Ohio, according to audio released Sunday by independent journalists Nick Sortor and Rhein Amacher.

In the recording, a woman answering a call to the facility reportedly told Amacher that Talarico appeared to have been discharged earlier that evening. The woman was not publicly identified, and the report did not include independent confirmation from the facility that Talarico had been a patient.

The allegation raises questions about the campaign’s explanation for Talarico’s absence. The Democrat had been away from in-person campaign events for approximately 12 days before appearing Friday at the Austin City Limits music festival. His campaign had said he was recovering from the flu.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller responded to the report by calling on Talarico to release his medical records. The demand adds a new political dimension to scrutiny of the nominee’s recent whereabouts as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas.

The audio alone does not establish that Talarico received treatment at the facility, and no independent confirmation of the claim was provided in the report.
