She-Hulk” actress Tatiana Maslany accused Tom Selleck and other celebrities of being “cowardly” for refusing to use their platforms to engage in politics, arguing that entertainment itself is inherently political.

Maslany made the comments during an appearance with journalist Mehdi Hasan, who brought up Selleck’s recent explanation for why he has avoided weighing in on President Donald Trump. Rather than viewing political neutrality as a way to avoid dividing an audience, Maslany argued that entertainers have an obligation to address political and social issues.

Selleck told CNN in August that he views Trump as a “mixed bag” but deliberately stays out of current politics. “Why piss off half the country when you're in the business of entertaining people?” Selleck said when asked why he has not publicly criticized the president.

Hasan presented Selleck’s position as a counterargument to Maslany’s view and also invoked former NBA star Michael Jordan’s famous observation that “Republicans buy shoes, too.” Maslany rejected the idea that entertainers can separate their work from politics.

“All entertainment is political,” Maslany said, arguing that movies and television necessarily reflect particular viewpoints, perspectives, and ideas about society. She said artists are “like mirrors to the world” and have an “intrinsic” responsibility to name issues.

Maslany then took direct aim at celebrities who choose not to speak out. “It’s such a bizarre mentality. It’s so cowardly,” she said, referring to the approach taken by Selleck and Jordan. She also suggested that wealthy entertainers have financial incentives to avoid taking controversial political positions.

The actress went further by mocking Selleck’s most famous role, “Magnum, P.I.,” joking about whether the series was ever intended to “really, really disturb people on a core level.” She argued that art should sometimes “destabilize people” and that entertainment is a form of communication with society.

Maslany has also used her own entertainment platform to advocate on political issues. The Zeteo program featuring her describes her as an outspoken advocate for Palestine, while the discussion also covered artificial intelligence in Hollywood and the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by the Trump-aligned Ellison family.

During the discussion of the proposed acquisition, Maslany expressed concern that conservative ownership could restrict the types of political viewpoints represented in Hollywood. She argued that entertainment could face pressure against producing content critical of the current administration.
