President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that "massive" oil, gas and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in Greenland, highlighting the territory's vast energy potential and unmatched strategic value for U.S. and European defense.
In a Truth Social post just after midnight, Trump wrote, "Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!" He added that experts believe the amount of easily available oil exceeds that of almost any land anywhere in the world. The president emphasized security benefits, noting that Greenland's location provides superior time, position, and sightlines for intercepting threats.

"Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived," Trump stated. "It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World!"
The announcement follows a September security agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland that expands U.S. military access. The deal allows for two new military bases and supports the "Golden Dome" missile defense system while affirming Danish sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination. It builds on a 1951 defense agreement and includes provisions for minerals cooperation and economic development.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, holds significant untapped resources including rare earth minerals. The push aligns with efforts to strengthen American energy production and reduce reliance on foreign supplies. Earlier reports indicated preparatory work by a U.S. oil company in eastern Greenland, though local reactions varied.
Trump has long viewed Greenland as critical to national security and resource independence. The latest development comes amid broader administration priorities to expand domestic and allied energy output.
