President Trump stated Monday that Iran wants to reach a deal with the United States quickly and badly while describing the country as a failing nation.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, "The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly. I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage - The concept of which we are open to." He signed the message as President Donald J. Trump.
The comment follows similar remarks Trump made in recent months amid the ongoing U.S. and Israeli conflict with Iran. On Sunday, he said Iran was seeking negotiations and expected the conflict to end later this year, provided any agreement favored the United States.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted Iran's weakened position. In August, he called Iran an officially failed nation with no navy or air force, a struggling currency, unpaid soldiers and police, and inflation at 300 percent. He has described its leadership as in total disarray.
The latest post leaves open the possibility of talks but places the decision firmly with the president. Trump has emphasized that any deal must meet strict U.S. conditions, including preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have persisted through much of 2026, with periods of military action and intermittent diplomatic efforts. Earlier this year, Trump rejected some Iranian proposals and demanded better terms, noting Iran's military setbacks.
Trump's approach reflects a hardline stance that prioritizes American interests and avoids concessions that could strengthen the Iranian regime. He has said he will not provide financial relief or favorable terms unless Iran demonstrates serious commitment.
