President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met at Gracie Mansion on Monday and struck a notably warm tone while discussing housing affordability and a long-stalled project to build 12,000 homes over Sunnyside Yard in Queens.

The two leaders, who have met several times since Mamdani took office, focused on practical areas of agreement rather than ideological differences. They agreed to advance technical discussions between their teams on the Sunnyside Yard proposal, which would involve constructing a massive platform over the rail yard to create a new neighborhood with housing, parks, and schools.

Mamdani described the talks as wide-ranging and said the meeting helped move the project forward. "We’ve been able to move forward with what has been a longstanding dream about the construction of Sunnyside Yards," he said after the meeting.

President Trump called the effort a big job that has been discussed for decades and noted it would likely require federal approvals and funding. He expressed optimism that the project could finally advance.

The discussion also touched on immigration and public safety, though the housing proposal remained the central focus. Trump has previously praised Mamdani as someone with great potential who could be a strong mayor, and the two have continued to find common ground on the need for more housing construction to address affordability.

President Trump is in New York ahead of a scheduled speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. The latest meeting builds on earlier conversations, including one in February where Mamdani pitched the Sunnyside Yard plan directly to the president.
