President Donald Trump indicated Friday that he would consider Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for a Cabinet position once the term-limited governor leaves office next year.

Trump made the remarks to reporters on the White House South Lawn before departing for an event at The Villages in Florida. When asked directly about a potential role for DeSantis, the president responded, "Well, I like him a lot."

The statement signals further reconciliation between the two Republicans, who clashed during the 2024 presidential primary. DeSantis launched a challenge to Trump but suspended his campaign in January 2024 and endorsed the eventual winner. Since then, they have appeared together at events, including a July 2025 visit to a Florida detention center where DeSantis praised Trump's immigration leadership.

Trump has voiced similar openness before. In March 2026, he told reporters he would "certainly consider" DeSantis for his administration after the governor's second term concludes in January 2027. Reports in April suggested DeSantis had discussed roles such as secretary of defense, attorney general, or even a Supreme Court seat during a lunch with Trump, though Trump privately described DeSantis as seeking a position.

DeSantis, a Navy veteran, has been mentioned as a potential fit for defense secretary, especially amid speculation about current nominee Pete Hegseth. The governor's successes in Florida, including on immigration and education policy, align with Trump administration priorities.

Their renewed alliance comes as DeSantis nears the end of his tenure. Florida's constitution limits governors to two consecutive terms, forcing him to step down. Political observers note the pairing could bolster Republican unity heading into the 2028 cycle, with DeSantis positioning himself for future national roles.

Trump's comments on Friday contrast with earlier tensions. In 2024, he dismissed the idea of DeSantis in a Cabinet post as "highly unlikely." Recent developments, including joint appearances and policy alignments like Florida's adoption of Trump health initiatives, have thawed relations.

No specific Cabinet slot has been confirmed, and DeSantis has not publicly commented on the latest exchange. The governor continues to focus on state matters, such as redistricting and legislation, amid his final months in office.
