President Donald Trump said Monday that Russia has “lost control” of its diesel industry as Ukrainian attacks have damaged refineries and disrupted fuel production during the war.

“Russia has unfortunately lost control of its Diesel Oil Industry due to its War with Ukraine,” Trump wrote in a social media post. He added that a large number of Russian diesel refineries had been damaged and were at least temporarily out of operation.

The comments came one day before Trump was expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. Trump has repeatedly called on Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries, arguing that the attacks are contributing to tighter diesel supplies and higher fuel prices.

Russian fuel production has faced significant disruptions. Reuters reported last week that six of Russia’s largest diesel-producing refineries account for roughly half of the country’s diesel output, with several facilities operating at sharply reduced capacity or completely shut down following drone attacks.

The disruption comes as the global diesel market faces broader supply problems. U.S. diesel prices recently moved above $6 per gallon for the first time, while U.S. diesel inventories fell to their lowest September level since records began in 1982, according to Reuters. Analysts expect tight global supplies to continue into 2027.

Trump again called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, saying the conflict was causing broader consequences for the global economy. Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine remains committed to diplomatic efforts and said ideas for de-escalation were being discussed ahead of the leaders’ meeting.
